Nature, colors and echoes of war

“Our Izograph” newspaper, Number 4, April 2005.

In the Domodyedovo History and art Museum opened a personal exhibition Olga Shulgina. Olga graduated from the Moscow Art and Industrial School of Kalinina (Department of Painting and Miniatures), and then the Institute. Surikov.

The past exhibition of Olga (before Domodedovo) was held in the Catherine Palace. There was made a happy opening-pictures of Olga “born” for similar interiors.

At the Domodedovo exhibition-Nature, flowers and echoes of the war. One of the favorite themes-the forest. So lucky Olga that her dear parents loved to spend their holidays in the kayak campaigns, where the future artist learned to see trees, mosses, flowers…

In the Domodedovo of the exposition there is a painting “Spring bloom.” The forest in the haze and the sun behind the forest. On a glade clear parallel shadows of trees, and a background for these shadows-the earth covered with the future raztsvetem. Space, air, depth… There is in the exposition and another forest. Dark, overgrown, and in the foreground a birch and an old stump. On the birch-tree glare from the barely penetrating Sun (Olga Master to write the light!). Each forest landscape has its own special expanse, its smell, its depth, its image. Presented at the exhibition Still Life. Still-life with a candle complex on a construction and colouring, on building of a background and a variety of textures. Very truthful and at the same time decorative.

Flowers. Flowers, not bouquets.
On a background of fresh greens, they fill all space of a picture.

But the bouquets-the refinement itself. All works of Olga are written not for small-sized premises, but quite for other space. It is not accidental that the exhibition in the Catherine Palace was mentioned at the beginning of the article. The “secret” of most of the pictures is common: The author looks at the “object” just a little below. “Object” (bouquet, still-life, forest stump, etc.) from such a look as if rises above the environment. Hence the requirement to the height of the room, to the height of the suspension, hence the special aristocratic style. The paintings are written for museums, for palaces. This is not an accident, as Olga was engaged in painting of mansions (Prokhorov-in Podsosensky Lane, Smirnov-on Pyatnitska) and church painting. The second section of the Domodedovo exhibition is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of victory. In her autobiography Olga wrote: “Had the honor of being photographed at the banner of Victory”. For a person with such an understanding of history, the theme of victory is not just another anniversary. The theme of the paintings is absolutely individual and does not repeat anything previously created.

Painting “1945g.”. Dancing. Women dance with women, sometimes with children. There is only one man. No legs.

“Trenches of thickets”. It seems to be just a landscape, but the name has prompted, and the eye can not but see the tragic traces of the past.

“Music is not silent.” Cold open spaces, soldiers with Garmonics. And over all this Shulzhenko with a blue handkerchief in his hands, like Madonna, surrounded by a sianem. There are other pictures, piercing, on the same subject. I have not seen, fortunately, Olga of war, but such documents of this epoch has managed to create.

Exhibition Shulgina leaves the impression of special solemnity, rare for our days of intelligence. It is a pity that all this is not often exhibited. We will treat the Domodedovo exhibition as a big find in today’s exhibition world as the opening of a new name.
